Day-by-Day Itinerary
Guwahati → Pobitora → Kaziranga
Arrival at Guwahati, then straight out to Pobitora for an afternoon jeep safari — the highest density of one-horned rhino anywhere in the world, and a near-certain sighting. Continue east along the Brahmaputra to Kaziranga for the night.
Kaziranga → Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Shergaon
Dawn elephant safari in the Central range, followed by a jeep safari through Kohora. Depart north across the Brahmaputra at Tezpur into the hills at Bhalukpong, via the Tippi Orchid Centre to Shergaon Monastery and its apple orchards.
Shergaon → Bomdila → Dirang → Tawang
Bomdila Monastery and View Point, then Dirang's Yak & Sheep Breeding Centre and Sangti Valley. The climb to Sela Pass follows, with Jaswant Garh War Memorial and Jung Waterfall on the descent into Tawang.
Full Day in Tawang
Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, timed for prayers where possible. Urgelling Monastery — birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama — the Giant Buddha Statue, War Memorial, Craft Centre and the local market.
Bumla Pass & the High Lakes
An early start for Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border, returning via Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake, PTSO Lake and Y-Junction. Rough road throughout and a genuinely high day out. Separate permit required.
Tawang → Dirang
A slow morning, then back over Sela Pass in afternoon light — a different pass entirely. Dirang hot springs and the old monastery on arrival if time allows.
Dirang → Guwahati
The long descent through the Kameng valley and back across the plains — a driving day, but a kinder one than doing the whole run from Tawang in a single stretch.
Guwahati → Shillong
Kamakhya Temple first thing, then Balaji Temple before leaving the city. Umiam Lake on the climb into the Khasi hills, then Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Ward's Lake and an evening at Police Bazaar.
Shillong → Cherrapunji
Laitlum Canyon early, before the cloud fills the valley. Then Sohra proper — Seven Sisters Falls, Nohkalikai, Mawsmai and Arwah caves, Eco Park, and Wei Sawdong.
Cherrapunji → Dawki → Mawlynnong → Guwahati
A living root bridge in the morning — the Double Decker for a four-to-five hour trek, or the easy single bridge at Riwai. Boating on the Umngot at Dawki, the Indo-Bangladesh border, then Mawlynnong and the Sky Walk before the drive to Guwahati for departure.
