Tawang gets recommended constantly in Northeast India travel content, but very little of that content is honest about what getting there actually involves. This is not a weekend add-on to a Meghalaya trip — it's a dedicated, multi-day overland journey, and understanding the route changes how you plan the rest of your itinerary around it.
From Guwahati, the standard route runs east to Tezpur, crosses the Brahmaputra, and enters Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong. From there it's Dirang, then the climb over Sela Pass — at roughly 13,700 feet, one of the highest motorable passes on the route — before finally descending into Tawang itself. Done properly, this is a three-day drive each way, not a single long haul, and trying to compress it usually means arriving exhausted and skipping stops that are genuinely worth the time (Sangti Valley, Dirang's hot springs, Bomdila's monastery).
The Inner Line Permit is mandatory for every Indian traveller and needs a scanned photo ID and passport photo submitted roughly ten days ahead — this isn't something to leave until arrival. If you want to add the Bumla Pass excursion to the Indo-China border, that's a separate permit issued locally in Tawang, open to Indian nationals only, and weather-dependent even once you have it.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Northeast. March through October is the realistic window — Sela Pass and the roads around it can close entirely under snow in peak winter, and even outside full closure, conditions can add hours to a drive that's already long. Pack for genuine cold regardless of season; Tawang and Sela sit high enough that nights stay cold even in what counts as "summer" at lower elevations.
