Kaziranga National Park runs two very different safari experiences, and most first-time visitors don't realise how different until they've done both. The elephant safari, run only in the early morning in the Central range, gets you closer to grazing rhinos than any jeep possibly can — elephants can move through tall grass and marsh that vehicles simply can't follow. It's shorter, though, and limited to a fixed number of slots released on a set schedule each season.
The jeep safari covers far more ground — the Kohora, Bagori, and Central ranges each have a distinct character, and a jeep can cover a full range in a single outing. You'll see more of the park's landscape and a wider range of species (wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and elephant herds alongside rhino), even if you don't get quite as close.
On rhino sightings specifically: Kaziranga holds the highest density of one-horned rhinos anywhere in the world, so a sighting on either safari type is close to guaranteed across a two-safari visit, even if a single outing occasionally comes up short.
Elephant safari slots are the genuine bottleneck — they're released on a fixed schedule and go quickly for peak-season dates (November through February). If an elephant safari matters to your trip specifically, that's the piece to lock in first; jeep safaris are far easier to arrange closer to your travel date.
